April 10, 2012 : The Comparative Healthcare Systems Program (CHSP) look at global health from a health care system perspective. CHSP aim to provide opportunities for the new generation of health care policy makers to compare and contrast health care systems on international level.
On March 21st 2012, CHSP held their first annual conference on the theme of Healing the Canadian Health Care System. In the conference, Dr Vedat Verter, professor of the Desautels Faculty of Management and Co-Director of the MD-MBA program, provided an overview of the funding of the Canadian health care system and presented his research on reducing waiting time at the ER.
Then, Dr Eric Latimer, health economist and researcher at the Douglas Institute, brought our attention to the mental health aspect of our health care system. He covered topics such as mental illness in Canada, the evidence-based practices movement, and its potential to increase efficiency in mental health care system. He also highlighted flaws in the Canadian system and lessons to be learned from the international arena.
Dr Amélie Quesnel-Vallée, associate professor with a joint position at the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health and the Faculty of Medicine, introduced the field of comparative health policy. Marzieh Ghiasi, McGill student in Ecological Determinants of Health, also shed light on her Taiwanese experiences with the CHSP Taiwan Program.
