May 15, 2012 : Miss Shaima Al-Khabouri and Mr. Jonathan Viau introduced their research in biotechnology at Health On Earth today.

Shaima and Johnathan both acquired their Masters degree in Biotechnology at McGill University, with research focus in Rheumatoid Arthritis. They shared their motivation studying this degree, and interests in its application in the pharmaceutical industry. Through this problem-based learning program and hands-on internship experiences, they developed methods to slow down the progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

'Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a form of inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease, for unknown causes. RA can occur at any age. Women get RA more often than men. Patients with RA develops fluids in joints which causes swelling and intense pain.' There are no drugs to completely reverse the effect of the disease. Through in vitro biochemical essays, Shaima and Jonathan found it an extremely rewarding process to test for drugs that can be a solution to people suffering with RA.
