After a wonderful summer hiatus, Health On Earth is back! This week Health On Earth and Michelle Laterrade, winner of the 2012 World Food Prize, spoke with Dr. Jackie Hughes and Dr. Greg Luther of AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center.
AVRDC - The World Vegetable Center is an international nonprofit research and development institute that is commited towards alleviating poverty and malnutrition in the developing world. Its headquarters is located in Taiwan, while center researchers at headquarters and regional offices lead and participate in projects throughout Asia, Africa, Central America, and Oceania. AVRDC works closely with the public and private sectors, including research universities, to disseminate improved vegetable varieties and agricultural production methods in developing countries.
Dr. Jackie Hughes shared with us why vegetables are important. As well, she explained to us how the organization links agricultural research and development to help farmers increase vegetable harvest and provide healthier and nutritious diets for families and communities. Dr. Greg Luther, for his part, shared his experiences training trainers, disseminating technologies, and working with local partners in various countries. In addition, we spoke with other research scientists at the headquarters, who helped us gain a better understanding of the organization about the multi-faceted work it does towards global food security.
