A debate on whether doctors should aid patients who wish to end their lives took place at McGill on February 2. In the wake of the Gloria Taylor case in BC and the recent report of Dying with Dignity Commission in Québec, the fifth annual student colloquium on Health and Law brought experts from diverse backgrounds addressing the broader public health concerns and legal implications of physician-assisted suicide.
During the panel presentations, Ms. Grace Pastine, Dr. Manuel Borod, Dr. Suzanne Phillips-Nootens, and Mr. Alex Schadenberg enriched our understanding to this sensitive and vital public debate through their work and research expertise. Followed by the presentations, Professor Margret Somerville and Professor Daniel Weinstock led a debate on 'Is legalizing physician-assisted suicide a good idea?'. Professor Somerville voice her opinion on 'euthanizing euthanasia', while Professor Weinstock 'defended the Duly Qualified Right' and promote affirmed autonomy until the end of life.
