Members of McGill’s Comparative Healthcare Systems Program (CHSP) joined us live in the studio to discuss their 2nd annual International Public Health Conference on infectious diseases held on March 21. CHSP is a student group that promotes discussion and organizes seminars about public healthcare in Canada and around the world.
We also heard from three McGill-based researchers profiled at CHSP’s conference: Dr. Theresa Gyorkos, whose research activities focus on helminth or parasitic worm control programs; Dr. Nitika Pant Pai, whose work uses the Internet, mobile phones and rapid point-of-care tests to develop public-health strategies for HIV testing in South Africa and India; and Kate Zinszer, who is researching country-level predictors of malaria trends in endemic countries. Important themes to emerge from the discussions included the role of political will in tackling infectious diseases and the intersection of medical research and entrepreneurship.
