MSG. Fried chicken. Tacos. These have all become conspicuous tropes of groups of colour in the world of Americanized food culture. In this show, sustainability graduate Jane Zhang navigates the choppy waters of environment, health, and heritage. She first speaks with Dr. Rachel Slocum, who has been researching the relationship between race and food for over 10 years. Using the definition of race as “an assemblage or collection of phenotypes and environment rearranged by colonialism and capitalism”, Zhang and Slocum dive into Slocum’s seminal paper “Race in the study of food”.
In Part 2 of this show, Jane Zhang interviews Shaina Agbayani, a Philipino-Canadian student in Equity studies and Political Science, who shares her experience of adopting a plant-based diet suited to her body and culture.
